🅿️ Understanding Italian parking lines

Don't park on yellow lines even briefly — enforcement is common, and disabled-permit spaces are actively monitored.
🛣 Tolls
Most motorways (green signs) are toll roads. Take a ticket on entry, pay on exit — cash/card/contactless. Don't store the ticket next to your phone (the magnetic strip can wipe).
TILU Tip
There's no license-reciprocity agreement between the US and Italy — carry the IDP alongside your license always. Camera-issued fines (average-speed cameras on the Autostrade) can take months to arrive via a debt-collection company, not the police directly. (Confirmed via the U.S. Embassy Italy's official driving guidance.)

The ZTL driving trap (the #1 unexpected fine). Camera-enforced restricted zones in historic centers (Rome, Florence, Milan, Pisa, dozens more). GPS apps route you through them; fines arrive by post months later via the rental company. Cost: €83–332 per crossing (€58 if paid within 5 days) + €30–70 rental processing fee. Since a 2024 reform, multiple same-day passes = one fine, not several. Watch for round "Zona a Traffico Limitato" signs. If your hotel is inside a ZTL, email your plate before arrival for free temporary registration.
